Being a Westsider in the sunny island of Singapore, we certainly had tried our fair share of Mala Xiang Guo in our area. However, we tend to have an affection for this particular branch at the food court at Jem shopping mall.
Look at the crowd during peak hours and it has been like this since its opening. After so many years, the crowd has barely shrunk. The customers are more than willing to sometimes wait up to 20-30minutes for their fix of the Mala dishes.
Like most Mala Xiang Guo outlets, they have a decent variety of dishes to choose from. I am actually not a big fan of Mala food, but Big Sister certainly is. She said that what sets this stall apart from its competitors is the chilli and spices used rather than the food itself.
Customers can choose their preferred level of spiciness and the highest level certainly lives up to its name. It is overly torching for my tongue but something that Big Sister can easily handle.
I normally ordered the lower spiciness level and from my experience of tasting various Mala across Singapore, this branch tends to have a flavoursome taste to it. The regular dishes accompanied by the spices they used were elevated and goes so nicely with rice.
The quality has been consistent over the years since its inception and no wonder the crowd rages on. If you happen to be in the west area, this is surely a must-try!
